THIS STRIKING image of a common shore crab was yesterday announced as the winner of this year’s National Heritage Week photography competition.

The photograph entitled “Crab Blue Bucket” was taken by John Gorman from Limerick on Ballinskelligs beach, Co Kerry. It was selected from 1,300 entries in the adult category of the competition.

Judges described the photograph as a typical image from the Irish seaside as it demonstrated great texture, movement and personality.

Meanwhile, the winner of the youth category was Ciara McCabe (17) from Co Sligo, for her photograph of a damselfly on a finger which the judges said portrayed the relationship of trust and comfort between the human and the fly.

Sofia Fox (7), from Dublin, won the under-12s junior category with her image of her older sister holding a waterlily leaf and snail. Judges said the entry showed the genuine glee and slight trepidation of discovering wildlife.

Wildlife expert and RTÉ presenter Éanna Ní Lamhna was head of the judging panel for the competition, which he said was a “great success with over 1,300 entries”.
