Taoiseach Brian Cowen discussed the future of Irish-US relations with two US Democratic leaders today, following the victory of Barack Obama in the presidential election.

Mr Cowen met Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont and former Congressman Bruce Morrison.

Discussions centred on the international economic situation, the prospects for immigration reform in the United States and the future of US-Irish relations as president-elect Barack Obama prepares to take office next January, a Government spokesman said.

"The Taoiseach outlined the Government’s strategy for dealing with the current economic situation and stressed the need for action at the global level as well as the national level.

"He also referred to the review of Ireland-US relations which he initiated during his first visit to the US as Taoiseach last July and which he sees as a key element in developing an even stronger relationship with the US under the Obama administration."

Senator Leahy and Congressman Morrison outlined their views on the likely priorities of Mr Obama and offered their advice and support to the Taoiseach and the Government, the spokesman said.

Mr Cowen took the opportunity to thank US ambassador Thomas C Foley for his "energetic and effective work as US Ambassador to Ireland as he nears the end of his term in that office".
