The prosecuting solicitor, Ms Kerr Moreton, said the couple had argued on the day of Mr Harvey's death.

"They had an argument. Mr Harvey may have struck Miss Andrews but she then pulled a knife on him.

"It appears there is a history of domestic violence between the couple. Principally violence by the defendant on the deceased."

She had been seen biting him on the ear, hitting him on the head with a bottle to a nightclub and punching him n the face in a nightclub, Ms Moreton said.

Evidence from Ms Andrews's former boyfriend, the father of her daughter Karla (6), was that she had drawn a knife on him.

Ms Moreton said 37 blows had severed both main arteries in Mr Harvey's neck. He also had stab wounds covering his back, head, face, upper body and arms.

Ms Andrews was granted conditional bail by magistrates, but will remain in custody pending an appeal by the prosecution against the decision. A Crown Court hearing is expected next Monday.
