PLANS for the restoration of a castle in Co Monaghan that was destroyed by fire two years ago, are to be discussed at a meeting of Monaghan County Council today.

The council owns the 18th-century Hope Castle building, beside Lough Muckno, at Castleblayney, which was razed in an arson attack.

A hotel housed in the building was also destroyed in the fire, which caused an estimated €3.5 million in damage.

Cllr John O’Brien said yesterday: “We are anxious that this historic building is restored because of its local economic and historical importance”.

The building was once owned by Lord Francis Hope, owner of the famous Hope Diamond, which is currently displayed in a New York museum.
