The way has been cleared for a €1.2 million upgrade of Derrynane House, the museum home of the Liberator Daniel O’Connell in south Kerry and one of the major visitor attractions in the area.
Kerry County Council has just granted permission to the Commissioners of Public Works to carry out the improvements.
The €1,220,891 grant for the work, under the Tourism Capital Investment Grant of the National Development Plan, was originally announced by Arts and Heritage Minister Jimmy Deenihan before its formal announcement by Minister for Tourism, Transport and Sport Leo Varadkar last November.
Mr Deenihan said the revamp would increase visitor numbers.
The works will include the provision of a lift and an exhibition space, a new visitor entrance and the upgrade of toilets, tea rooms and car spaces.
The house currently receives more than 23,000 visitors a year, up 2,000 since 2009.
