A man slipped into a river and drowned as he walked his new dog during the summer in the grounds of Cork University.

An inquest into the death of Samuel Vaughan (66), St Finbarr’s Road, Cork, heard how the dog was found on the riverbank in a distressed state. Mr Vaughan was found floating in the river Lee by a passerby in the grounds of UCC on June 4th.

He was described as a man “who would do anything for you” and was in “great form” at the time of his death.“He was delighted with his new dog. He came into the bar to show us, he was emotional about the dog,” owner of the Rock bar David Corkery said.

The inquest heard he had no known family and had been reared by farmers in Ballyvourney. Coroner Philip Comyn returned a verdict of accidental death.
