A man described as a major drug dealer in Cork city was yesterday jailed for seven years when he pleaded guilty at Cork Circuit Criminal Court to four counts of possessing drugs for supply.

Judge A.G. Murphy imposed the sentence on Brendan Daly jnr (30) Fullers Place, Cork who Det Garda John Sheehy of Cork Drugs Squad described as "the main dealer in the south inner city."

Daly pleaded guilty to a number of offences before the court in October and had his sentence adjourned but he continued to deal drugs, said Det Garda Sheehy.

Garda Pat Enright told how he caught Daly taking £140 worth of cannabis stashed in a wall near his home on July 19th, 1997 while he also gave evidence of gardai seizing £1,640 worth of cannabis in Daly's house on February 26th, 1998.

Gardai apprehended Daly on July 25th, 1997 and caught him dropping £240 worth of cannabis, Det Garda Sheehy said. Since his case was adjourned in October, gardai raided his house on May 10th of this year and seized a further £1,400 worth of cannabis resin, Garda James Maher said. Judge Murphy noted that Daly had pleaded guilty in October and then was caught dealing again. The appropriate sentence in such cases would be 10 years but he had to give Daly credit for pleading guilty, he said.
