British army technical officers have carried out a controlled explosion on a vehicle parked in a village six miles outside Portadown, Co Armagh.

The suspicious vehicle was parked at Castleview in the village of Gilford, Co Down. Homes were evacuated and roads were closed while the security operation took place. A PSNI spokesman said nothing was suspicious was found in the vehicle.

Last night bomb disposal experts disarmed an explosive device which was discovered near the village.

The device was found on the side of the Gilford to Banbridge Road, near Gilford Police station.

Police believe it was designed to cause serious damage and think it may have been the work of dissident republicans.

PSNI Chief Inspector Stephen Day described the planting of the device as reckless and cowardly attempt to murder police officers and said there was a very real threat to the lives of passers-by.

Another explosive device, packed with shrapnel, was also defused in Gilford last night.
