ME and MY MONEY:MARY HICKSON, Chief Executive, Cork Opera House
Are you a saver or a spender?Spender. I try not to stress out too much about money. When its there its there, when its not its not.
Do you shop around for better value? Not really, but I do stick to what I know. We have a bit of a routine when it comes to shopping. I would have to credit my husband Luke for that, though. He runs the house these days.
What has been your most extravagant purchase ever and how much did it cost?Outside of property I think the most extravagant personal item was a dress I bought at the end of last year. It was almost €600 and has proven, so far, to be worth every penny. It gets pulled out for weddings, launches, etc. Ill get good wear out of it over the next few months with so many launches coming up in Cork Opera House and the gala opening of Corcadorca's The Winters Talein October.
Have you ever crossed the Border to shop? When we lived in Dublin a neighbour of mine used to go to Newry every few months to shop, and I tagged along once or twice out of curiosity more than anything, really. I was surprised at the difference in the price of things but, to be honest, I wouldnt be making a habit of it.
Do you haggle over prices? There are two occasions where I would: when I feel Im being taken for a ride (in which case if they dont back down I usually walk away), or if I feel we might get a laugh out of the effort. Sometimes people surprise you when you show a bit of neck.
Has the recession changed your spending habits?Absolutely! Everything needs to be considered now. Before the recession and kids Luke and I had very little to worry about but now it has to be carefully calculated. This has ultimately affected our lifestyle and that of our friends. There is a lot more going around to each other's houses now, but I guess thats also because of kids and other responsibilities.
Do you invest in shares? No. Never have. I dont really understand that business.
Cash or card?Cash for me please. I have never had a credit card and am still trying to resist the urge. I would be dangerous with a credit card.
What was the last thing you bought and was it good value for money? The last material purchase was a pair of sunglasses from TK Maxx. They were on sale for €18 and have been on my head for the last three days. I would say they were well worth every penny.
Have you ever successfully saved up for a relatively big purchase?I did the SSIA a few years ago, but who didnt? It was really nice to cash that in at the end.
Have you ever lost money?Apart from negative equity? Unfortunately, yes, I have 'lost' money. One year I had over €600 cash in my handbag to finish my Christmas shopping (never again!) and we stopped for lunch somewhere. Next minute my bag was gone and was later found in the ladies minus the money.
Is money important to you?Health and happiness are much more important.
How much money do you have on you now?€2.36 to be exact. No plans for the day, though, so hopefully that'll be enough to see me through.
