THE treatment of a pregnant terrorist suspect in a British jail appeared to be unnecessarily brutal, the House leader, Mr Maurice Manning, said.

He was responding to concerns voiced by Mr Dick Roche (FF) who said he had been horrified at the description by a Fianna Fail MEP of the treatment of Ms Roisin McAliskey. "She is subjected to regular strip searches. That can be a traumatic experience for any person at any time, but for a woman in her state that is quite outrageous. It is certainly way beyond what any civilised community should find acceptable."
