Communications regulator Comreg has started a consultation process over whether it should make additional wireless broadband capacity available.

The agency said the proposed capacity increase was "sizeable" but that the exact extent would be determined during the consultation process.

At the moment 13 companies, including Imagine, Irish Broadband and Digiweb, operate 120 licences to provide wireless broadband around the State.

Under Comreg's management strategy for the State's radio spectrum; which is used by broadcasters and wireless and mobile communications, it proposes doubling the capacity available for mobile broadband operators.

There are currently 121,000 wireless broadband customers which allows people access internet and e-mail services using their phone or a wireless connection on their laptop.

Wireless broadband is seen as a possible alternative to the installing cable broadband services across the State. This is a slow, capital intensive process with parts of the State still not covered.

The Comreg consultation concerns a total of 118 spectrum in the 3.4GHz to 3.8GHz band for domestic and business companies. It is also considering the release of channel E in the 3.5GHz band.

"Comreg believes that the proposals outlined in this consultation will address the spectrum needs of both existing and potential fixed wireless operators and enable them to expand their networks to meet the demand from consumers for increased availability and choice in broadband services."
