44,000- the number of primary school children who were driven one kilometre or less to school. A total of 247,000 primary school children were driven to school, or 55 per cent of school children.

285,000- the number of workers who left home before 7 am to get to work. Some 113,000 left home before 6.30 am.

1.2m- the number of private households with cars, an increase of 170,000 compared to 2002.

90%- the proportion of households in Meath with a car. The next highest was Co Cork (88 per cent), Co Waterford and Co Kildare (both 87 per cent). About 40 per cent of households in Dublin had no car.

16km- the average distance workers travelled from their homes to their workplaces. Rural-based workers travelled an average of 21km compared with 13km for workers living in urban areas.

27.5mins: The average journey time to work. People in urban areas spent slightly longer commuting (27.9 mins) compared to those in rural areas (26.8 mins).

57%- the proportion of commuters who drove a car to work - up from 55 per cent in 2002. (When combined with workers who travelled as car passengers, the total was 70 per cent).

6.1%- the proportion of commuters who used the bus to get to work, a decrease from 6.7 per cent in 2002.
