THE chairman of the Irish Republican Felons Club in west Belfast was fined £200 yesterday for refusing to co-operate in a police investigation into IRA funding.

Liam Shannon, of La Salle Park, Belfast, denied a summons brought under the Proceeds of Crime Order after he failed to attend an interview with two financial investigators at Woodbourne RUC station last June.

The investigators, both from England, were appointed by Judge Anthony Harte in 1997 following an application by Det Supt Molloy, of the RUC's Serious Crime Squad.

Shannon said his reason for not attending the interview was that he might incriminate himself in regard to a parallel charge of false accounting at the Felons Club. Afterwards he said he intended to appeal.
