LITTLE ROCK - James McDougal (56), a former business partner of President Clinton, was sentenced to three years in prison yesterday for his part in the failed Whitewater real estate scheme. He was also given three years' probation, including one year of confinement to his home.
McDougal joined the Clintons in the Whitewater real estate investment scheme in Arkansas in the late 1970s when Mr Clinton was governor of that state.
He said last year that his testimony in the probe would clear the president and his wife of any wrongdoing, but voiced doubt - yesterday on whether that was still the case. "I wouldn't go to the bank on that," McDougal told reporters outside the courthouse. "Stay tuned."
