The final stretcher bearing the remains of someone killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center is being taken from the Ground Zero site today.

During a ceremony, the final stretcher is scheduled to be ferried out to symbolise all those victims who were not recovered.

Rev Paul Matthews
The Rev. Dr Daniel Paul Matthews leads a service of thanksgiving celebrating the relief ministry at St. Paul's Chapel near ground zero in New York.

Since recovery operations began, flag-draped stretchers have been carried out of the rubble, each bearing the remains of someone who died on September 11th.

The silent service marking the end of the eight-and-a-half month operation is to begin at 10.29 a.m. (3.29 p.m. Irish time) - the time the second tower collapsed.
