An armed robber stole a substantial sum of cash today after holding up a cash-in-transit van in Newtownabbey.
Police said the thief, in his early 20s, threatened security staff with a knife at a supermarket on Farmley Road before making off with a cash box. The robbery took place at around 11.30am.
Police said the man fled to a waiting blue Peugeot car being driven by an accomplice which was later found abandoned in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.
Only one box was stolen in the raid but police said it contained a substantial amount of cash. The thief broke open the box inside the car and covered the interior in red dye.
It is believed the robber and his accomplice may also be covered in the dye.
He is around 5ft 10in, of medium build and was wearing a grey tracksuit. Detectives appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at Newtownabbbey station or using the Crimestoppers helpline.
