Thieves broke into two camper vans belonging to French tourists on Wednesday and tied up the occupants and stole a quantity of francs and punts. The two French couples were asleep in the camper vans in Baltray, Co Louth, when two men forced entry through side windows.

Shortly after the theft, the tourists, from Brest in Brittany, freed themselves and alerted gardai in Drogheda. They were not seriously injured.

The robbers were described as being in their early 20s. A Garda spokesman said it was thought that the same pair were responsible for breaking into a car and stealing belongings from an American woman who was holidaying in the same area.
