CASH found in a jailed Carlow drug dealer's home has been forfeited to the Revenue Commissioners and solicitors by order of Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

James Doyle (26), with an address at Staplestown Road, Carlow, is serving a five year sentence imposed last year. He had admitted possession for sale of 253g of cannabis resin found by gardai when his home was searched after a surveillance operation.

Det Garda James Brophy told Judge Cyril Kelly that Doyle operated as a drug dealer in Cos Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford and in Dun Laoghaire. He also had a previous conviction for kidnapping a person who owed him money for drugs.

Gardai found almost £5,000 in cash as well as bank and credit union books with a total of £17,000 in them when Doyle's home was searched.

Mr Conor Devally, prosecuting, told Judge Kieran O'Connor it had been agreed that £2,967 of the cash found would be forfeited to the Revenue Commissioners, £1,840 to solicitors Francis B. Taaffe and Co of Athy, and the £48 balance to a Dublin solicitor.

Doyle's brother, Paul (24), of the same address, was given a 12 month suspended sentence after he pleaded guilty to possession of the same drugs.

The court was told Paul Doyle had a mental age of 12-14 years and also suffered another severe psychological problem.

Del Garda Brophy agreed Paul Doyle was under his elder brother's influence and acted as a runner for him.

Judge Kelly directed that James Doyle be transferred to Coolmine Therapeutic Centre on October 13th next as a resident if there is a place for him.

He rejected an application by Mr Gregory Murphy SC (with Mr Aiden Doyle), defending, to have Doyle admitted to bail at the end of his current sentence in August.
