A DAIL committee will tomorrow be granted powers to compel witnesses to give evidence to its inquiry into the shooting dead of Mr John Carthy by gardai in Abbeylara, Co Longford, writes Mark Hennessy, Political reporter.
On Wednesday, a sub-committee of the Justice, Equality, Defence and Women's Rights Committee will receive wide-ranging powers under the Compellability of Witnesses Act, which was brought in for the DIRT tax inquiry.
Submissions have been received by the sub-committee, which is chaired by Fianna Fail TD Mr Sean Ardagh, from the Carthy family, members of the community in Abbeylara and the Irish Council of Civil Liberties.
A formal inquiry could begin as early as April 24th. The sub-committee will hold a preparatory meeting tonight.
Meanwhile, the Public Accounts Committee is expected to make further recommendations in its second and final report into DIRT tax evasion by financial institutions, due to be published today.
