Mossie Carroll was this morning installed as Limerick hurling manager following the shock resignation of Eamonn Cregan yesterday.
Carroll, a selector during Cregan's reign, will assume immediate control of the senior team.
The Limerick County Board discussed Cregan's resignation well into the early hours of this morning.
Cregan made an unscheduled appearance at the meeting. Reports last night suggested that Cregan was unlikely to reconsider his decision to quit and the board were unlikely to ask him to.
Cregan stood down in protest at the board's policy in relation to the playing of dual players.
The board believes players should be able to play for the hurling and football inter-county teams if they so wish. Cregan, however, opposes that view.
News of Cregan's decision to step down emerged yesterday morning when a resignation letter he had written at the weekend was delivered to the county board.
