Car dealer fined for VRT evasion

A Dublin car dealer has been fined for the evasion of vehicle registration tax on luxury cars

A Dublin car dealer has been fined for the evasion of vehicle registration tax on luxury cars. John Dunne (39), owner of Tony Boland Car Sales on the Naas Road, Dublin, registered high-spec Land-Rovers with the Vehicle Registration Office but entered them as lower specification models, resulting in a VRT shortfall of €11,116.

Dunne, Monastery Park, Clondalkin, was given a one-year sentence, suspended for two years, and was fined €12,700. He has three months to pay and faces a month in prison if he defaults. Judge Yvonne Murphy noted the strong character references handed in for him, including one from boxer Bernard Dunne.

He had pleaded not guilty to eight counts of evading vehicle registration tax on five high-spec Land-Rovers and three top- end Audi vehicles between June 2005 and September 2007.
