A car bomb exploded near a Madrid convention centre today following a telephone warning claiming to be from Basque rebels ETA and no one was hurt, police and emergency services said.

The bomb, in the Campo de las Naciones neighbourhood, exploded at about 9 am local time and broke windows, a police spokesman said.

The blast, roughly an hour after the telephone warning and after police had cordoned off the area, came after Spain's Supreme Court late last night banned Basque nationalist parties from participating in March's regional elections in the Basque Country, because of links to ETA.
