Defending champion Jennifer Capriati beat Belgian Kim Clijsters to reach the final of the Australian Open.

The American took the first set but allowed her 18-year-old opponent to steal back into the match as the pair struggled to hold serve.

Capriati regained her composure and raced through the decider to come through a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 winner. Capriati, the top seed, won her first career grand slam title at Melbourne Park last year and followed it up with the French Open title in June.

She will face three-time winner Martina Hingis, an earlier three-set winner against Monica Seles, in Saturday's final.

After losing the first set, Hingis survived a scare in the third, which she allowed to slip from 5-1 to 5-4 before securing a place in the final for the sixth successive year.

"It's very different going in to the final this time having played some good matches and then against Monica," said Hingis. "I believe in it now and it is a nice feeling."
