The number of applications for third-level places made to the Central Applications Office (CAO) has fallen by 1,600.

The drop reflects a reduction in the number of mature students applying for college places.

Meanwhile, the number of applications from Leaving Certificate students is at expected levels.

While there are still late applications to come, at this stage the 60,300 applications represent a "significant" drop on last year, Mr John McAvoy, CAO manager, said yesterday.
