Canadian police have arrested 10 people and are investigating over 200 in an international crackdown on internet child pornography linked to those in Britain and the United States.

Police speaking at a news conference to announce the Canadian arrests criticised the government for failing to make enough effort to combat child pornography.

More than 2,300 people in Canada are suspected of accessing child pornography websites, but only a fraction have been arrested, according to police.

"International co-operation is a dream - national co-operation is a nightmare," said Det Sgt Paul Gillespie of Toronto Police's sex crime unit. "It is time for those responsible on a federal level to live up to their responsibility. We need help".

Det Sgt Gillespie said Toronto Police had 241 child pornography "targets" from the investigation begun two years ago by the United States and had made 10 arrests.

US investigators say they have traced 250,000 suspected pedophiles around the world through credit card details on child pornography websites.

British police forces have arrested more than 1,300 people, including police officers, social workers, teachers and judges - and The Who rock star Pete Townshend, has been questioned and bailed.
