Mr Ely Callaway, founder and chairman of Callaway Golf, the maker of the leading Big Bertha brand clubs, died today, the company said. He was 82 years of age.

A spokesman said Mr Callaway, who had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April, died at his home in the early hours with his family around him.

Mr Callaway founded the company in 1982 and had retired as president and chief executive in May. Mr Ron Drapeau succeeded him in those positions.

Mr Callaway is survived by his three children, Reeves, Lisa and Nicholas.
