The former EU Commissioner and Attorney General David Byrne has been appointed chancellor of Dublin City University, it has been announced.

Mr Byrne served as Attorney General from 1997 to 1999 in the first Fianna Fail-Progressive Democrats coalition Government led by Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern.

He was appointed EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection in September 1999, and served in that position until 2004.

Called to the bar in 1970, Mr Byrne became a Senior Counsel in 1985. He practised in both the Irish Courts and the European Court of Justice and also served as a member of the International Court of Commercial Arbitration from 1990-1997.

Mr Byrne is a graduate of UCD with a BA in Economics, Ethics and Politics.

He studied law at King's Inns. He was a founder of FLAC, the student-run Free Legal Aid Centres.

He is also on the board of a number of companies as a non-executive director, including Irish Life and Permanent, and Kingspan.
