Geneva - The United Nations children's fund, UNICEF, yesterday condemned a human rights group for buying the freedom of slaves in Sudan, saying the action would fuel the arms trade in the African country.

But UNICEF also said the initiative by the Swiss-based Christian Solidarity International had prompted the Sudanese government to ask the UN organisation to draw up terms of reference for an inquiry into the allegations raised.
