Attempting to win over American blacks who voted overwhelmingly against him, US President-elect George W. Bush will mark Martin Luther King Jr Day today with a visit to a racially mixed school in Houston, Texas.

With five days until he takes the oath of office, Mr Bush will honour the murdered civil rights leader's place in American history and stress education is a way to move up the economic ladder.

Despite Mr Bush's campaign pledge to be a uniter there are signs he will have trouble on Capitol Hill, where Republican and Democrat senators are already fighting over two of his cabinet nominations, Mr John Ashcroft as attorney general and Ms Gale Norton as interior secretary.
