The absence of park-and-ride facilities on the new Stillorgan Quality Bus Corridor is a "fundamental flaw" which cannot be ignored, according to the IBEC Transport Council.

The council said it meant that no alternative was being offered to those on the route who wished to avail of public transport but who did not live within walking distance of a bus stop.

The council said yesterday that unless additional measures were taken, the value of the dedicated bus route would be lost and the Stillorgan route would become synonymous with delaying car travellers on their way to and from work.

The absence of "real advice" about the options in relation to interchange of transport modes.

The N11 is a national route carrying port and airport traffic which in the absence of the eastern by-pass or the Dublin Port Tunnel has nowhere to go.

The significant number of industrial estates which do not have feeder buses to the route to facilitate employees and business in general. There is no alternative to private cars in these instances.

Ms Karen Gannon of IBEC said: "QBCs are a good idea, but they cannot be implemented in an ad-hoc manner with little thought as to their long-term viability in the absence of an integrated transport system and without offering a real alternative to private transport".
