A CORK bus driver who sexually assaulted a nine year old mentally handicapped girl on his bus has been jailed for 30 months by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
The 55 year old man attempted suicide last year while awaiting sentence and was transferred to hospital psychiatric unit.
Judge Michael Moriarty criticised what he called "the insensitivity" of the girl's school, which disbelieved the allegation.
The defendant pleaded guilty to three charges of sexually assaulting the girl in 1993. Judge Moriarty suspended the final 14 months of the sentence on condition the defendant continue counselling.
