Two buses crashed head on in northeastern Brazil, leaving 22 people dead and injuring another 70, officials said today.
The accident happened late last night outside Aracaju, capital of the poor coastal state Sergipe, at the end of a long holiday weekend.
"Twenty-two died - most on impact - and 70 other passengers were sent to nearby hospitals," a spokeswoman for the local fire department said.
One of the buses appeared to be attempting to pass another vehicle when it slammed into the oncoming bus, but the cause of the accident was still under investigation, she said.
