Bullets found at Dutch murder suspect’s home

The suspected killer of Dutch right-wing politician Mr Pim Fortuyn had ammunition at his home, public prosecutors said today.

The suspected killer of Dutch right-wing politician Mr Pim Fortuyn had ammunition at his home, public prosecutors said today.

But chief public prosecutor Mr Theo Hofstee said the man suspected of shooting Mr Fortuyn yesterday had given no motive for the attack.

Mr Hofstee said the 32-year-old man had no criminal record but that bullets were found at his home that matched the calibre of casings found at the murder scene.

Mr Hofstee said a search last night of the man's home in the central town of Harderwijk - in The Netherlands's staunchly religious "Bible belt" - found material relating to environmental activism, though he said he made no link between that and the murder.

He said police found a car used by the suspect in Hilversum, where Mr Fortuyn was shot after giving a radio interview. Mr Hofstee said the unnamed suspect was calm when he was arrested shortly after the killing.

The man will make a court appearance in Amsterdam tomorrow, where prosecutors will ask for permission to extend his custody.
