London - Britain's finance minister, Mr Gordon Brown, still harbours ambitions to be prime minister and believes he could have won the 1994 Labour Party leadership contest against Mr Tony Blair, according to a new book.

The author of the book, political journalist Paul Routledge, says it was written with Mr Brown's "full co-operation", although sources close to Mr Brown said it was not an authorised biography.

The book confirms stories of chilly relations between Mr Brown and the Foreign Secretary, Mr Robin Cook.
