Demonstrators linked arms outside the British prime minister's residence today and called for a ban on weapons sales to Pakistan and India as the two nations stand on the brink of war.

More than a hundred demonstrators protested outside Prime Minister Tony Blair's Downing Street residence and then handed in a petition, signed by around 50 organisations, calling for a complete halt to arms sales.

"It's coming to crunch point with India and Pakistan, we can hope this will finally encourage an arms embargo - but at least we've taken the opportunity to show our disgust," said Mr Gideon Burrows, a spokesman for the Campaign Against the Arms Trade, one of the groups behind the protest.
