British police investigating the £1 million sterling (€1.6 million) theft of three works by Van Gogh, Picasso and Gauguin found them hidden behind a public toilet this morning.

Experts are expected to verify that the retrieved pieces were Vincent van Gogh's The Fortification of Paris, Pablo Picasso's Povertyand Paul Gauguin's Tahitian Landscape.

The paintings were stolen from the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester over the weekend. They were recovered this morning following a tip-off.

The Whitworth is one of Manchester's foremost art galleries and is renowned for textiles and works on paper. Its collection includes a number of other works by Picasso and Van Gogh's Hayricksdrawing.
