A boy brain damaged after a road accident which occurred when he was aged six will be paid €3 million and costs under a settlement approved by the High Court yesterday.
The action was taken by Eric Mahon, now aged 13, suing by his father, Patrick Mahon, of Clifden Drive, Ballyfermot, Dublin, against Mr Brian Grendon, of Greenfort Drive, Clondalkin, Dublin.
It was claimed Eric was a pedestrian on the road at Clifden Drive on July 9th, 1998, when the vehicle hit him.
The child was then taken by ambulance to Our Lady's hospital, Crumlin and later transferred to Beaumont Hospital where he was treated in intensive care for a time.
He was discharged from Beaumont Hospital on July 27th, 1998.
He is brain damaged and has other injuries, including paralysis of one arm and one leg. He requires continuing care.
Yesterday, on the application of Jack Fitzgerald SC and Ian Brennan SC, for Eric, Mr Justice Richard Johnson approved the settlement for €3 million.
The judge also directed that an application be made later to have Eric made a ward of court.
