Bookmaker Boylesports is taking over 15 betting shops owned by rival William Hill in the Republic in a deal that the Irish company says will save 65 jobs.

William Hill has already closed 20 shops in the Republic and there was a question mark over the future of 15 outlets.

Dundalk-based Boylesports said today that it has agreed to buy these betting shops, in locations ranging from Dublin to Galway.

The company said that the deal would secure the future of 65 jobs in the 15 shops.

Chief executive John Boyle welcomed the agreement today. "This latest takeover will complement our existing shops and further cement our position as the largest independent bookmaker in Ireland," he said.

Earlier this year, Boylesports took over 17 outlets which were part of the Celtic Bookmakers chain owned by broadcaster Ivan Yates.

High rents had forced the business into receivership.
