Boy with cerebral palsy gets £1.65m

A nine year old boy who has cerebral palsy is to be paid £1

A nine year old boy who has cerebral palsy is to be paid £1.65 million under a settlement approved by the High Court yesterday. Ronan Andrews, Dara Court, Celbridge, Co Kildare, will need permanent future care and an application will be made to have him made a ward of court, Mr Justice Johnson was told.

He was born at the Rotunda Hospital on March 22nd, 1987, by Caesarean section. Ronan, suing by his mother, Ms Catherine Andrews, brought an action against the governors of the hospital and Dr Noreen Gleeson.

Mr Ronnie Robbins SC, for the boy, said the proceedings against the hospital were to be dismissed without any order for costs. Mr Robbins said the action had been settled, subject to court approval and without admission of liability, for £1.65 million against Dr Gleeson.

Counsel said the parents had made "heroic efforts" in their care for the boy. He was at present in a home.
