London - Atheist Jim Crace's humanist book about Jesus, called Quarantine, has won the Whitbread novel award.
Other £2,000 prizes under the Whitbread Book Awards umbrella went to Poet Laureate Ted Hughes for poetry, former actress Pauline Melville for her first novel, and Graham Robb's biography of French writer Victor Hugo.
