A bomb scare held up a British Airways jumbo jet for more than 24 hours at Shannon Airport at the weekend.

The aircraft was diverted to Shannon on Saturday morning after a bomb alert was received by the pilot. The plane was on a flight from Caracas to London.

Gardai, some with sniffer dogs and electronic equipment, began the examination of the aircraft and luggage at 7 a.m., while the aircraft was parked on the remote stand, a mile from the terminal building.

The 375 passengers and crew were accommodated at hotels in Limerick, Ennis and Shannon without access to their main baggage.
