A Palestinian bomber blew himself up in Jerusalem today, critically wounding a policemen who stopped the bomber's car at a roadblock, Israeli police said.
"There was a powerful explosion. The bomber's body was thrown from the car in the blast. The car has been decimated. We are checking to see whether it was a car bomb or a suicide bomber," Jerusalem police chief Mr Mickey Levy told Israeli television.
Ambulance crews said two other people in addition to the police officer were wounded in the explosion on a street near the ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim neighbourhood.
Earlier an Israeli was shot dead by a Palestinian gunman near the Jewish settlement of Har Homa on the outskirts of Jerusalem, Israeli medical sources said.
Security sources said the man was gravely wounded by Palestinian gunman, who apparently escaped after the attack. He was taken to Ein Karem hospital in Jerusalem but died shortly afterwards from his wounds, the sources said.
The armed wing of the Islamic Jihad militant group, the Al-Quds Brigades, claimed the shooting, in a statement received in Beirut by AFP.
