Limerick County Council has lifted a boil notice in place for the Abbeyfeale water supply for public health reasons since December 21st last.

The local authority said today it had lifted the notice following water quality monitoring and consultation with the Health Service Executive.

Areas supplied by the Abbeyfeale water scheme include Abbeyfeale town, Caher, Templeglantine, Rathcahill, Tournafulla, Mountmahon, Knocknasna, Ballagh, Cratloe, Coolwest, Parkanna, Templeathea, Athea Village and Direen.

The council’s director of services Paul Crowe said: “Everyone can now resume normal use of the water supply, including for drinking, food preparation and brushing teeth.”

Separate boil notices affecting Kilmallock and Newcastle West were lifted earlier this week.

The authority and the HSE’s water liaison group will continue to monitor supplies.

The council acknowledged “patience, cooperation and assistance of the general public during the period of the boil water notice” and said it greatly regretted any inconvenience caused to householders and the business community.

Separately, Dublin City Council said the water supply situation continues to improve. Water storage levels have recovered sufficiently to allow an easing of the restrictions.

The council said areas subject to shut-offs will now be rotated with supply being maintained one night in three. The period for shut-offs will be 7pm to 7am. Areas with pressure reductions and possible loss of supply would also have the restrictions eased.

Water supply in the 'zone 8' area (Rialto Bridge) was turned off "in error" last night and the council extended its apologies for this. The area will have supply tonight.

Zone 2 (Slievebloom) has had extremely low pressures for the last 36 hours due to the malfunction of a valve. The council said this had been resolved and the area will have normal supply tonight.

Fingal County Council also said there had been “significant improvements” to the stored capacity in its reservoirs and it would ease back restrictions over the weekend.

Restrictions will be in place again next week, however.

Tomorrow the council will shut off water in ’area 3’ from 7pm to 9am. This includes Swords, Cloghran/Baskin, Mulhuddart, Castleknock, Farmleigh, Blanchardstown, Carpenterstown, part of Huntstown, Hartstown, Blakestown, Clonsilla, Coolmine and Phoenix Park Racecourse.

There are no planned restrictions in Fingal for Saturday and Sunday.
