The North Eastern Health Board has announced a three-year programme in partnership with the GAA in an effort to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the number of people smoking, especially young people.

Other key objectives are to create an awareness of the effects of drug misuse and alcohol abuse, as research by the NEHB's health promotion unit has shown that smoking and alcohol consumption rates are high in comparison to the national figure.

The initiative was officially announced at this month's meeting of the health board.
