Blast bomb injures five in north Belfast

A Protestant woman in her 30s and four police officers were injured after a blast bomb was thrown in north Belfast yesterday.

A Protestant woman in her 30s and four police officers were injured after a blast bomb was thrown in north Belfast yesterday.

She received her injuries after violent clashes in the Limestone Road area on yesterday afternoon. The woman was taken to hospital suffering from an eye injury and cuts to her face.

The injuries sustained by the police officers are not thought to be serious. One has a leg injury, the other three have upper body injuries. The remains of the blast type device have been recovered for examination.

Loyalist residents claimed the device had been thrown over the interface byfrom the nationalist side. This was disputed by Sinn Fein which claimed she was injured by a device thrown by loyalists which fell short.

The incident followed a series of disturbances in north Belfast yesterday in which five other officers were injured.

Police at the Gunnell Hill area of the city came under attack from petrol bombs and a car was pushed into police lines by a loyalist group.
