Some 22 people were hospitalised suffering from respiratory problems following a blast at a recycling plant in Dublin this morning.

The incident is believed to have been caused by a number of aerosol cans exploding after they were mistakenly placed in containers to be recycled.

The workers at the Irish Packaging Recycling plant in the Merrywell Industrial Estate off the Ballymount road were taken to St James's and Tallaght hospitals as a precaution.

Gardaí and members of the Dublin Fire Brigade attended the scene and a spokesman for the Health Service Authority said it is investigating the incident.
