From Monday, we can enjoy a rare chance to see the work of a cross-section of contemporary Bulgarian artists at Dublin Castle. Selected by art critic, Velislava Stoyanova under the auspices of the Values Foundation of Bulgaria, Leg-ends of Bulgaria marshals 35 paintings and five sculptures by 14 of the country's established artists.
All the work has been made in the current decade, but none of the artists is likely to be familiar here. Apart from traditional subject matter such as still life and the figure, there is a substantial amount of allegorical narrative, with references to myth, personal experience and history. Later this year the artistic traffic will run the other way when Irish artists participate in the Tenth Print Biennial at Varna on the Black Sea.
