Mexico City - The bizarre death of a top official at the height of a scandal involving an Argentine alleged torturer, a major government contract and a troubled car registration system has fuelled speculation in Mexico.

Doubts emerged yesterday over the initial report that the Deputy Commerce Secretary, Mr Raul Ramos (45), had committed suicide on Wednesday by slashing his wrists, his femoral arteries and then his jugular. Ramos was found dead in a forest just outside the capital, and six apparent suicide notes were discovered in his car a few hundred metres away.
