The Catholic Youth Council's role in developing the talents and skills of you people, particularly through its work with early school leavers and young offenders was commended yesterday by Dr Eamonn Walsh, Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin.
Launching the CYC's annual report for 1996, he said: "It shows that young people, youth leaders and youth workers, can work enthusiastically together to provide opportunities for both young and old to work together in solidarity."
The CYC, which is the Dublin diocesan agency for young people, also helps people to combat drugs and provides leisure activities for children of all backgrounds. Last year 150 summer projects were organised to provide leisure and educational activities for more than 30,000 young people. Its activities involved 10,000 volunteer adults who worked as youth leaders through 317 affiliated clubs.
The report was launched at St Maelruan's Travellers' Centre in Tallaght, where Dr Walsh was joined by the world snooker champion, Ken Doherty, for a game of pool to publicise the CYC's annual collection on Sunday.
