At Birr Castle yesterday, the newly restored "great telescope" was manoeuvred into position and again pointed at the sky. The Taoiseach, Mr Bruton, was among the large crowd who witnessed the occasion. The restoration - the telescope has not functioned since 1910 - is the first phase of the development of Ireland's Historic Science Centre at Birr.
